Sick of being told what to do
I am a project worker with a local charity that provides citizen advocacy to people labelled as having a learning disability.
I am currently looking for someone who would be willing to help a young man make some important decisions in his life. At the moment he lives at home but would like to move out and get his own place. He feels trapped and feels like his whole family takes away a lot of his freedom. He wants more flexibility in his life, wants to go out more.
This young man has a great sense of humour, loves to go out and about and would like to have a friend who could take him places in the evenings and at the weekends.
Many people do not have the luxury of having close friends or someone to support them when times are difficult, citizen advocacy attempts to change this by providing a personal relationship with someone who can support and provide guidance in times of need. There are many people in Edinburgh that have no one in their life, are isolated from society and the only people they interact with are paid staff. We are trying to help this by recruiting responsible members of the public to become citizen advocates, we then match them with people who are labelled as having a learning disability and have issues going on in their live that they need support with.
