Summer burlesque workshops in Edinburgh
Burlesque dance workshops in Edinburgh
Think Dita von Teese, Gypsy Rose Lee and Bettie Page – we will take you through peeling, posing and teasing! Slip on your seamed stockings and opera gloves, as our summer workshops lead you through the world of burlesque, introducing you to the art of ‘tease’, and burlesque bump ‘n’ grind.
'BURLESQUE IN HISTORY'
We will look at some of the defining moments in burlesque through the ages.
WORKSHOP 1: Naughty Victoriana
We'll take you back to the golden age of music hall, where burlesque began to show its saucy leg, and only the naughtiest ladies in town would dream of taking the stage in this manner!
Please bring skirts (knee length and flared, a la can-can skirts), which you should be prepared to lift to an unnacceptable length!
WORKSHOP 2: The Roaring '20s
In an age when the western world found a new liberty and joie de vivre, audiences sought out the exotic, and flappers were all the rage. We will create a cheeky charleston, fast-paced and fun, that epitomises the freedom of the era.
Please bring gloves and long beads if you have them. Feel free to wear a flapper-style dress.
WORKSHOP 3: The Fan-Dancing '40s
Made famous by Sally Rand, fan dancing is a show stopping dance style; elegant and visually beautiful. Working with two large feather fans, we will teach you how to 'hide and reveal', teasing your audience with the fans, and focussing their attention on illusions of exposure. Fan dancing works on the essence of suggestion and exploits the dancer’s skill of illusion. A blend of style, grace, flirtation and a touch of humour make our fan dance class a graceful, exotic and fun way to learn this, one of the most aesthetically pleasing of all burlesque dance styles.
Please note numbers are limited for this workshop. Please email viva@burlesqueandcabaret.com to book in advance
WORKSHOP 4: The Twisted 50's
In an age where women went back to the home, female sexuality took on some new and naughty twists. We will explore the limiting domesticity of the '50s and the subversively kinky side of pin-up and cheesecake.
